What Should I Wear for my Photography Session?
That is a fantastic question!! I know it’s my number one question when I’m thinking about my own family photographs. “What Should I Wear to my Photography Session?” It is probably the most difficult part of the photography session! If you’re like me and you don’t have a sense of fashion, it’s nice to have someone help you along the way. I am GREAT at helping others, just not myself. I can look at someone’s family or even just the clothing and judge whether its a good choice or not. This also applies to couples looking for their photography session as well.
DO NOT WEAR MATCHING OUTFITS!! DO NOT WEAR ALL WHITE OR ALL BLACK OR A MIXTURE OF THEM. DO NOT WEAR WHITE SHIRTS WITH BLUE JEANS. DO NOT WEAR FLUORESCENT COLORS!!! Phew, there… now that’s out of the way.
1. Coordinating outfits are perfect! Choose one outfit and pick the others based on the colors in that outfit. Maroon, Mustard, blue, gray, brown, tan, and dark green are all amazing solid colors to go with. Pastels are a fantastic choice.
2. Layers and textures look amazing in photographs.
3. Don’t worry about just clothing though. Those comfy old sneakers, probably won’t look that great in photos. So be mindful of what shoes you wear.
4. Be mindful of the weather! That cute dress or tank top may not be the best idea in the winter or fall time. And that cute jean jacket… probably not a great idea during the summer here on this hot island.
5. Be purposeful in choosing your outfits.
6. Consider the decor and location in your home. Do you want it to coordinate with your decor or frames you may already have? Or does that matter to you?
7. Wear what is comfortable, but sometimes its fun to step a tad outside your comfort zone. I know that t-shirt and jeans are my comfort zone, but I don’t want that in my family photos. I usually dress up my blue jeans with a fancy shirt and accessories.
8. Women don’t wear sleeveless shirts!! It will make your arms look larger than they are. A great alternative is 1/2 sleeves, regular sleeves, and in the winter 3/4 or full sleeves.
9. Men don’t wear too tight of pants that show too much. Also, don’t wear shorts that are too loose as they can make you look larger than you are as well as showing off too much.
10.Children/babies- don’t put them in an outfit they will be uncomfortable in, such as vests(unless they like them) and/or shoes. Basically clothes they aren’t used to. Children are particular I’ve noticed when it comes to some types of clothing, so be mindful of what you’re making them wear.
It’s always helpful to look at the outfits already put together on some of the websites such as OldNavy.com, Gap.com, or any other clothing store you may shop at. Those help me come up with an idea of what I may want. {Guides below do contain spaghetti strap shirts and a few bright colors that I do not suggest, however you can dress them up with a cardigan or sweater.
